Drive It Before You Build It | Iron Ridge Off-Road Houston TX
Iron Ridge Off-Road · Houston TX

DRIVE ITBEFORE YOU BUILD IT.

Three build levels. Real trail rigs. Drive the one that matches where you want to go — then decide what to build.

Why This Exists

Most People Commission a Build Based on What They Think They Want.

Building a serious rig is not a small decision. A proper lift, wheels, tires, bumpers, and skids can run anywhere from $6,000 on the entry end to $40,000 or more for a purpose-built trail machine. Most shops will take your money and build what you ask for.

We would rather you drive what you are thinking about first.

Not a watered-down demo. Not a stock truck with a leveling kit. The same caliber of build we put into customer rigs — real components, real fabrication, real capability — available to drive before you commit to building one of your own.

Our rental clients know exactly what they want. That makes every build conversation faster, sharper, and better for everyone.

Every rental package also includes the option to add a certified trail guide or driving instruction session. Whether you are new to technical terrain or want a co-pilot who can push you further on the trail than you would go alone, we have that covered.

Level 1

The Street Build

The build that changes how you think about your truck

What It Is

A serious entry-level build. Street legal, registered, and insured for public road use. This is the kind of rig you could daily drive if you wanted to — but it was not built for the commute. It was built to make you look at every gravel road, every rutted trail entrance, and every creek crossing differently than you did before.

What You Can Do With It

Take it on the street. Take it on a fire road. Run it on a mild to moderate trail. Light rock crawling, forest service roads, beach access, overland terrain. If you have never driven a properly built truck before, this is the one that recalibrates your expectations for everything.

This rig handles the 80 percent of off-road terrain most people actually encounter — the way a stock truck handles a parking lot.

How the Rental Works

Level 1 is a standard vehicle rental. Pick it up from the shop, drive it wherever you want to take it — town, highway, trails, wherever. Return it clean and in the same condition. Standard rental agreement, standard insurance requirements, standard deposit. Drive it to dinner Friday night and a trail Saturday morning if you want.

Typical Build Profile
  • 3.5 to 4 inch lift on a quality suspension system
  • 35 inch mud terrain tires
  • Method or Fuel wheels
  • Aftermarket front and rear bumpers
  • Rock sliders
  • Full LED lighting package
  • Street legal, registered, insured for public road use
Comparable Build Cost on Your Truck
$6,000 – $10,000
Depending on platform, suspension system, and whether bumpers, sliders, and lighting are included or just suspension and tires. We will give you a specific range when you come in.

The Trail Build

For when the street build is not enough and you need to know if the next level is right for you

What It Is

This rig does not go back on public roads. It lives at the trail. Beadlock wheels so you can air down without losing a bead. Aggressive 37 inch tires. A full skid plate system from front to back. A winch bumper with a functional recovery winch. Onboard air. A half cage for structural integrity on side slopes. This rig is built the way a shop builds a rig when they are not making any compromises.

What You Can Do With It

Technical rock crawling. Serious mud. Side hill traverses. Shelf roads with exposure. The obstacles that make a Level 1 rig nervous are where this rig starts to feel at home.

If you have been on trail in a mildly built truck and watched a serious rig work through something you could not attempt — this is what that rig looks like from the inside.

How the Rental Works

Level 2 is a delivered rental. We bring it to you at the trailhead or the park. You run it on the trail. We retrieve it when you are done. You do not drive it on public roads. The rig stays on terrain it was built for and we handle the logistics on both ends.

A trail guide add-on is strongly recommended for anyone who has not driven at this capability level before. The vehicle can do more than most drivers know how to use on the first session.

Typical Build Profile
  • 5 to 6 inch lift on a high-clearance suspension setup
  • 37 inch aggressive mud or hybrid terrain tires
  • Beadlock wheels
  • Full front and rear skid system
  • Winch bumper with 10,000 lb winch
  • Onboard air compressor
  • Rock sliders
  • Half cage
  • Full LED package
Comparable Build Cost on Your Truck
$14,000 – $22,000
Depending on platform, suspension selection, skid coverage, and whether a cage is included. We will scope it to your specific truck and use case when you come in.

Level 3

The Flagship Build

The ceiling. Nothing held back.

What It Is

This is the most capable rig this shop builds. Not a modified stock platform. A purpose-built machine — fabricated from the ground up or comprehensively rebuilt from the frame — representing every skill, every technique, and every high-end component this shop works with. Long travel suspension. 40 inch tires or larger. Chromoly axle shafts. Full tube or exo cage. Bypass shocks. Built to run the kind of terrain that ends the day for every other rig on the trail.

What You Can Do With It

Everything. Serious rock crawling. Competitive-grade trail terrain. Extended overland. The kind of driving that requires a rig purpose-built for it — because a modified street truck, no matter how well built, has a ceiling this rig does not have.

If you are here, you are serious about commissioning something at this level. We want you to understand exactly what you are buying before you write the check.

How the Rental Works

Level 3 is not available on a walk-in or open booking basis. It is reserved for customers actively scoping a high-end build who want a hands-on experience before commissioning. We will schedule a session that includes time behind the wheel on appropriate terrain and a full component walkthrough with one of our builders.

A trail guide is included with every Level 3 session. This is not optional. The rental fee is credited toward your build if you commission within 90 days.

Build Profile — Varies Per Rig
  • Long travel suspension system
  • 40 inch tires or larger
  • Chromoly axle shafts front and rear
  • Full tube or exo cage
  • Bypass shock system
  • Dedicated onboard systems
  • Purpose-built — not a spec package
Comparable Build Cost on Your Truck
$30,000 – $60,000+
Depending on starting platform, fabrication scope, suspension system, drivetrain upgrades, and cage specification. Not an impulse purchase. We do not treat it like one.

Add-On to Any Rental

Trail Guide & Instruction Packages

Every rental level is available with a certified trail guide or off-road driving instruction package. These are not tour guides — these are experienced off-road drivers who know the terrain, know the vehicle, and know how to get more capability out of both than you will find on your own.

Trail Guide Package

Your guide rides with you for the duration of your rental session. They know the trail, they know the lines, and they know how to read terrain so you are not figuring it out at the obstacle.

If you want to push further than you would go alone — or if this is your first time on technical terrain — a guide makes the session significantly more valuable.

Available as an add-on to Level 1 and Level 2 rentals. Included automatically with all Level 3 sessions.

Driving Instruction Package

Structured coaching session focused on technique — throttle control, line selection, body position management, recovery positioning, and obstacle reading.

This is for the driver who wants to come out of the day a better off-road driver, not just someone who drove a capable rig around a trail.

Available as an add-on to any rental level. Specify in your booking form that you want the instruction package rather than standard guide.

The Debrief

Every session ends with a conversation with the builder. What went into it. What a comparable build on your truck costs. What the timeline looks like.

After Your Session

You Will Leave Knowing Exactly What You Want to Build.

Every rental session ends with a debrief. Not a sales pitch. A conversation with someone who actually built the rig you just drove — covering what went into it, what a comparable build on your specific truck would cost and take, and what the timeline looks like.

When you are ready, we will already know your truck and your use case. The process moves faster because the first conversation already happened on the trail.
