MT Tires Are a Decision, Not a Discovery.

We sell mud terrain tires to people who have already decided what they want from a build. If you're still comparing, read our all-terrain tires page first — that's where the comparison lives. If you're here, you already know: mud terrain tires exist to maximize traction in loose terrain — deep mud, rock, sand, wet clay. The aggressive lug pattern that clears mud on the trail is the same pattern that generates road noise, higher rolling resistance, and shorter tread life on the highway. That's the deal. MT tires don't apologize for it.

What we do at Iron Ridge is make sure the tire fits the build correctly, that sizing doesn't create clearance problems or powertrain stress, and that if a regear is warranted, we catch it before you're driving a dog of a truck on the freeway. We also offer full wheel and tire packages if you're selecting rubber and rims at the same time.

Where MT Tires Work and Where They Don't.

MT tires are purpose-built. That means they're excellent at specific things and a real compromise for others. Know both before you commit.

MT Tires Trade Away

Wet pavement — open tread has less contact area on asphalt; aquaplaning risk up
Highway fuel economy — rolling resistance and aerodynamic drag both increase
Road noise — the same tread that clears mud generates significant highway hum
Tread life — aggressive compound wears faster on paved surfaces
Braking distance on pavement — heavier tire with less road contact; stopping is longer
Powertrain strain — heavier unsprung weight; without a regear, power delivery suffers

On-Road Tradeoffs You Need to Know.

The biggest surprise for first-time MT buyers isn't the noise — they expect that. It's the wet highway behavior. MT tires have significantly less contact patch on asphalt compared to AT tires because the open lug spacing that clears mud reduces the amount of rubber actually touching the road. Stopping distances and lane-change feel are both affected.

Fuel economy loss is real and varies. Most lifted trucks going from stock tires to 35"+ MT tires lose 1–3 MPG depending on how aggressively the tire is sized and whether the powertrain has been retuned or regeared. On a diesel or a big V8, that's bearable. On a mid-size truck trying to make 25 MPG, it's a meaningful daily expense.

Daily Driving with MT Tires

If your truck does more pavement miles than trail miles, an all-terrain tire is the smarter choice. MT tires are for builds where off-road performance is the primary objective and the highway is just how you get to the trailhead. Be honest about your split before you commit.

Tread life is the other variable. MT tires wear faster on pavement because the compound is engineered to grip loose terrain, not resist abrasion from asphalt. On a truck that runs 80% highway, you'll see significantly shorter tread life than an AT or highway tire in the same size. Budget accordingly.

MT Tire Sizing and Regear Implications.

Going bigger with MT tires changes your powertrain math. Understanding the relationship between tire diameter, axle ratio, and drivability is part of what we do at fitment consultation.

33" MT Tires

The entry point for most lifted half-tons. A 3" lift with 33" MT tires clears on most trucks without trimming. Stock 3.73 or 3.92 gears often survive here — drivability is acceptable though not optimal. The performance ceiling on 33s is real: they handle most Texas trail systems well but aren't the right tire for serious rock or deep mud crawling.

35" MT Tires

The most popular MT size we install. Requires 4"–6" lift for clean clearance. Stock gearing (3.73 or lower) typically struggles — sluggish on-ramp feel, poor shift timing, and a real loss of low-end torque. A regear to 4.56 or 4.88 restores most of what you lost. We run both services in-house and coordinate the timing so it's done in one shop visit.

37" MT Tires and Larger

37"+ MT tires are serious hardware. Nearly all trucks need a regear — typically 4.88 or 5.13 depending on the axle. Wheel well clearance often requires trimming or fender flares. Suspension geometry changes require attention to prevent uneven wear. Brake upgrades are worth discussing. Builds this aggressive also often pair with beadlock wheels for airing down on trail. If you're going here, plan the build holistically rather than bolting on the tire last.

Tire Diameter × Gear Ratio — Get the Math Right

Every inch of tire diameter you add makes your effective gear ratio numerically smaller — meaning you've lowered your axle's mechanical advantage. The general rule: 33" tires want at least 3.73 gears. 35" tires want 4.56–4.88. 37"+ wants 4.88–5.13. Skipping the regear when you go big costs you fuel economy, towing capacity, transmission longevity, and everyday drivability. We can run a regear consultation as part of any MT fitment appointment.

Versatile MT Benchmark

The KM3 is the tire that serious trail rigs default to when they want proven performance and reasonable on-road manners. Mud-phobic compound, excellent wet traction for an MT, and BFG's CoreGard sidewall protection. Available in more sizes than most competitors. The go-to when you want maximum credibility across terrain types.

Nitto Trail Grappler M/T

Quieter Highway, Strong Rock

The Trail Grappler runs quieter on the highway than most MT tires — the tread pattern is engineered for reduced road noise without sacrificing off-road capability. Strong rock performance thanks to the three-ply sidewall and stone ejectors. A good choice for builds that need MT capability but log meaningful highway miles.

Toyo Open Country M/T

Deep Mud Specialist

The Open Country M/T is built for serious mud and off-camber terrain. Open, self-cleaning tread blocks and an aggressive sidewall lug pattern that keeps working when the main tread is buried. If your terrain is Houston Gulf Coast clay mud, creek crossings, and wet bottoms, this tire belongs in the conversation.

Mickey Thompson Baja Boss M/T

High-Speed Off-Road

The Baja Boss is the choice for builds that run faster off-road or need wide-open high-desert performance. Sidebiters and an aggressive void pattern with strong sidewall construction. Also a popular aesthetic choice — the tread appearance is distinct and the tire photographs well on lifted rigs. Available in very large sizes for big builds.

The right choice depends on your terrain, how much highway you drive, and your wheel size. We match the tire to the build, not to a brand preference.
Yes. MT tires are heavier, have higher rolling resistance, and create more aerodynamic drag than all-terrain or street tires. Expect 1–3 MPG loss depending on tire size, vehicle weight, and whether you've regeared. Larger MT tires without a regear compound the fuel economy loss further by making your effective gear ratio numerically lower.
Sizing depends on your lift height, wheel backspacing, and fender clearance. A 3" lift typically allows 33"–35" MT tires with proper wheel offset. A 4"–6" lift commonly runs 35"–37". Anything over 37" usually requires significant suspension work, body trimming, or both. We do a rub clearance check on every MT fitment before mounting.
For most trucks going from stock size to 35" MT tires or larger, yes — a regear is worth considering. Larger tires lower your effective gear ratio, hurting low-end torque, transmission shift points, and fuel economy. MT tires are noticeably louder than AT or all-season tires at highway speeds, especially above 60 mph. The aggressive open tread creates a pronounced road hum that varies by brand and speed. The Nitto Trail Grappler is generally considered quieter than most MT tires. If you split time between trails and daily driving, factor road noise into your decision before committing to an MT tire.
If your truck spends most of its life on pavement with occasional trail runs, an all-terrain tire is the better daily driver. AT tires are quieter, more fuel-efficient, and better in wet highway conditions. MT tires are for builds where the trail is the primary use case and the highway is just how you get there.
