Most half-tons run a leaf-sprung rear axle. The Ram 1500 does not — it uses a coil-sprung five-link rear, and a lot of trucks add four-corner air suspension on top of that. That is the whole reason a Ram rides like it does, and it is also the reason a generic lift kit and a quick-lube install will make it ride worse, not better.
You cannot just block-lift a coil rear, and you absolutely cannot slap spacers on an air-ride truck and call it done — the air system targets a ride height and will fight you. A proper Ram suspension build uses parts engineered for the coil rear or the air system, re-centers the axle with the right track bar, and finishes with an alignment.

From a clean level to a 6-inch big-tire build, these are the four Ram setups we run most. The first fork in the road is always coil versus air — after that, it comes down to tire size and how you use the truck.
A platform-correct front level kills the rake and clears a 33 or 34. On coil trucks that is a strut spacer; on air trucks it is an air-compatible kit plus sensor recalibration. Either way it gets aligned. See our leveling kit service for the details.
A real lift kit with rear coil spacers or taller coils, a corrected track bar, and front bracket or knuckle work to keep the geometry right. The way to clear 35s without ruining the Ram's ride or making the rear axle wander. Coil-sprung Rams respond well to a designed system, and BDS is the catalog we quote most often on this truck.

We confirm whether you are on coils or air before anything is ordered, verify clearance at full lock and droop, and re-center the rear axle so the truck tracks straight after the lift.

The five-link coil rear is lifted with coil spacers or taller coils plus a corrected or longer track bar — never blocks or add-a-leaf. Done right, it keeps the smooth factory ride that makes Rams ride better than the competition.
Air-equipped trucks target a set ride height, so spacers alone make them fault or self-level against the lift. These need air-compatible components and ride-height sensor recalibration. It is more involved — and we do it right.
The 2009–2018 DS and the 2019+ DT lift differently. The wider DT has more electronics and tighter liner clearance on big tires. We spec verified-fit parts per generation and recalibrate the driver-assist aim the lift affects.
A built Ram is the most comfortable half-ton you can take down a dirt road, and it overlands and tows beautifully. Knowing where that comfort-first platform tops out keeps your build matched to how you actually drive.
If you want the best-riding lifted half-ton in the H-E-B lot that still handles leases, overlanding, and towing, the Ram is hard to beat. If your heart is set on technical rock crawling, a shorter solid-axle rig is the better tool — and we will tell you that before you spend a dime.
