Why Alignment After a Lift Is Not Optional

Change a truck's ride height and you change every suspension angle, full stop. Even a two-inch leveling kit rotates the geometry enough to throw off camber, caster, and toe. The truck might look great in the driveway and feel fine for a week — then it is feathering the inside edges of brand-new tires and wandering on I-10.

This is the most common, most expensive corner that gets cut. A quick-lube bay slaps on a leveling kit, skips the alignment to hit a price point, and the customer eats a set of tires six months later. We treat the alignment as part of the lift, not an upsell — because a lift is not finished until the geometry is set right.

On solid-axle rigs there is an even bigger reason: lost caster is a primary cause of death wobble — and specifically death wobble that starts after a lift. Restoring it is alignment work, and it is exactly the kind of thing a general shop is not equipped to do. Every lift and leveling kit we install ends on our alignment rack.

What an Off-Road Alignment Actually Corrects

A lifted-truck alignment is about more than toe. These are the four angles we set — and caster is the one a lifted 4x4 lives or dies on.

The Big One

Caster & Caster Correction

Caster gives straight-line stability and self-centering. Lifting reduces it, causing wander and, on solid axles, death wobble. Caster correction through adjustable control arms or correction parts restores it. The most important fix on a lifted 4x4.

Tire Wear

Camber

Camber is the inward or outward tilt of the tire. A lift can push it out of spec, which wears the tire edges and hurts handling. We set camber back into range — with correction parts on independent suspensions where the lift demands it.

Eats Tires Fast

Toe

Toe is how parallel the tires point, and it is the angle most sensitive to tire wear — a small error scrubs rubber off fast. New ride height and bigger tires change it, so we set toe precisely on every lifted truck.

Thrust Angle

Thrust angle is whether the rear axle points straight ahead. If it is off, the truck dog-tracks and the steering wheel sits crooked even when aligned up front. We check and correct it so the rig tracks true down the road.

What an Alignment Fixes — and What It Can't

A proper post-lift alignment solves a lot of problems, but it is not magic. Here is what it does and what has to be handled before the rack.

4x4 Wheel Alignment Done for the Lift

Aligning a lifted 4x4 is not the same as aligning a stock car. The ride height is different, the tires are bigger and heavier, and the build may have correction parts that have to be dialed in. Here is what we do differently.

We align on a proper rack with the rig set up the way it actually runs, and we road-test every alignment so the numbers match how it drives, not just how it reads on the screen.

Lifted-Truck Specs

We align to specs that account for the lift, the bigger tires, and how the rig is driven — not blind factory numbers for a stock ride height. The goal is a truck that tracks straight and wears tires evenly at its real configuration.

Caster Correction

Where the lift cost you caster, we restore it with adjustable control arms or correction parts before we finalize the alignment. On solid-axle rigs this is the difference between a stable highway truck and a wandering, wobble-prone one.

Road Test & Settle Check

Every alignment is road-tested for pull, wander, and a centered wheel. New suspensions settle, so a lift we install gets a free re-check at 500 miles to set it again once the springs and bushings have taken their set.

Post-Lift Alignment Questions, Answered

Yes, every time. Any change in ride height — even a modest leveling kit — changes the suspension angles and throws off camber, caster, and toe. Skipping the alignment is the number one reason lifted and leveled trucks wear out the inside or outside edges of brand-new tires within a few thousand miles and wander on the highway. An alignment is part of every lift we install, not a separate trip.
Caster is the angle of the steering axis that gives a vehicle its straight-line stability and self-centering. Lifting a solid-axle truck or Jeep rotates the axle and reduces caster, which causes wandering, a vague on-center feel, and on solid-front-axle rigs is a major contributor to death wobble. Caster correction — through adjustable control arms or correction parts — restores that angle so the truck tracks straight. It is the most important alignment fix on a lifted 4x4.
A standard alignment rack sets a vehicle to factory specs, but a lifted 4x4 is no longer at factory ride height, and many lifts need correction parts and adjustments a quick-lube tech is not set up to deal with. An off-road alignment accounts for the lift, the bigger tires, and the geometry parts, and often requires adjusting or installing caster and camber correction. We align lifted trucks and Jeeps every day, which a general shop simply does not.
Get an alignment immediately after any lift, leveling, or suspension change, and again at the 500-mile settle point because new springs and bushings settle. After that, an annual check is smart for a wheeled rig, plus any time you notice a pull, uneven tire wear, or a steering-wheel that is off-center. Off-road use is hard on alignment, so checking it is cheap insurance against a tire bill.
An alignment with proper caster correction is part of the fix, but death wobble usually has more than one cause. On a solid-front-axle rig it typically comes from a combination of lost caster, track-bar geometry, and worn front-end parts.
