Toyota 4Runner Suspension, Built for the Long Haul

The 4Runner has earned a near-religious following for one reason: it just keeps going. People buy them to keep them, which means a 4Runner build should make the truck better for years — not look good for one and rattle for the rest. That starts with a properly specced suspension, not the tallest spacer you can bolt on. We also build Tacoma builds, Land Cruiser builds, and the closely related Lexus GX builds for owners across the Toyota platform family.

The classic 4Runner suspension build is a 3-inch matched kit on 33s: enough clearance for Texas trails and overlanding, with the front geometry corrected by upper control arms and the ride still composed at highway speed. On KDSS-equipped TRD trucks, the hydraulic sway-bar system has to be relieved and re-indexed — a step most shops skip and we never do.

Whether it is a fifth-gen that has been your daily for a decade or a brand-new sixth-gen, we walk the truck, ask where it goes, and build the spec around the answer.

4Runner Lift Kit, Coilover & Long-Travel Options

From the classic 3-inch build to a desert-ready long-travel setup, these are the four 4Runner builds we run most. Where you land depends on tire size, KDSS, and whether you overland, trail, or chase high-speed dirt.

Most Popular

4Runner Lift Kit, 3"

The classic build. A matched 3-inch kit with upper control arms and a rear spring or spacer to keep it level. Clears 33s, rides composed, and covers Texas trails and overlanding. Toytec, OME, Icon, or Dobinsons by use case.

Tuned Ride

4Runner Coilover Upgrade

Adjustable coilovers from Fox, King, and Icon for ride-height adjustment and better damping — especially worth it for trucks carrying a front bumper, winch, or heavy overland load.

Desert

4Runner Long-Travel

Long-travel arms and coilovers from Total Chaos or Camburg with a matched rear for big wheel travel and high-speed dirt. A specialized desert build — we will tell you honestly whether it fits your use.

Specialty

KDSS-Aware Lift

On Trail and TRD trucks with KDSS, we relieve and re-index the hydraulic sway-bar system during the lift so the truck sits level and articulates correctly. The difference between a build that works and one that leans.

4Runner Lift Fitment by Generation

The 4Runner has spanned three platforms in the last twenty years, and the fifth gen alone had a fourteen-year run. KDSS, front geometry, and the new sixth-gen electronics all shift the parts list. Here is what actually changes.

We confirm whether your truck has KDSS, verify clearance at full lock and droop, and align and recalibrate whatever the lift affects.

4th Gen · 2003–2009

The under-appreciated classic. Independent front, solid coil rear, X-REAS on some trims. Lifts cleanly with a matched 3-inch kit and UCAs. Strong, simple, and a great value build platform.

5th Gen · 2010–2024

The icon, with a fourteen-year run and unmatched aftermarket support. KDSS appears on Trail and TRD trims and must be re-indexed during the lift. The 3-inch build on 33s is the definitive setup.

6th Gen · 2025+

Toyota's new global platform, shared with the Tacoma and Land Cruiser, including hybrid i-FORCE MAX trucks. We use verified-fit parts and recalibrate driver-assist aim the lift affects on this new chassis.

What a Lifted 4Runner Lift Kit Does Best

A built 4Runner on 33s is the quintessential do-everything Texas trail rig and overlander. Here is where that capability shines and where to stay realistic.

Handles Confidently

  • Hill Country and East Texas trails, Easy to Moderate
  • Rock and ledges — solid rear axle and lockers help
  • Mud, ruts, and crossings at reasonable depth
  • Overlanding and camp roads with a full load
  • Daily driving and highway, fully retained
  • Sand and high-speed dirt, especially with long-travel

Where to Be Realistic

  • Extreme technical crawling — IFS droop limits flex
  • Deep mud once 33s start spinning
  • Overloading the back without rear spring support
  • KDSS trucks lifted without proper re-indexing
✓ The Honest Version

For overlanding, Texas trails, and a daily that runs to 300,000 miles, the 4Runner is just about the perfect platform, and a 3-inch build is all most owners ever need. If you want to crawl serious rock, a solid-front-axle rig is the better tool — and we will say so. Many 4Runner owners also add steel bumpers and rock sliders once the suspension is sorted, and you can see finished rigs in our 4Runner build photos.

Toyota 4Runner Lift Kit Questions, Answered

The 3-inch lift is the classic 4Runner build. It clears 33s, keeps the ride composed, and is what the best matched kits from Toytec, OME, Icon, and Dobinsons are designed around. You can run more with longer-travel components, but for the daily-plus-trail life most 4Runners live, 3 inches and a good 33 is the sweet spot.
Yes. KDSS, the hydraulic sway-bar system on Trail and TRD trims, has to be relieved and re-indexed during the lift so the truck sits level and the cross-linked bars work afterward. Skip that step and a KDSS 4Runner ends up leaning. We lift KDSS trucks the right way, every time.
A 3-inch lift comfortably clears a 33-inch tire such as a 285/70R17 on most 4Runners, often with a light fender liner trim. 34s and 35s are possible with more trimming and careful offset. We confirm fitment for your exact generation and wheel before ordering.
Yes. We install bolt-on long-travel kits from Total Chaos and Camburg for owners chasing high-speed desert performance, along with the matched rear setup to balance it. Long-travel is a desert and whoops build, not a rock-crawling one, and we will be honest about whether it fits how you use the truck.
At a 3-inch lift, aftermarket upper control arms restore the front ball-joint and CV-axle geometry and let the truck align properly. On a mild leveling kit you usually do not need them. We will tell you which camp your build is in based on the height and how you drive.
Yes. The 2025-and-up 4Runner moves to Toyota's new global platform shared with the Tacoma and Land Cruiser, including hybrid i-FORCE MAX trucks. We spec verified-fit parts for it and recalibrate what the lift affects rather than guessing on a brand-new platform.
