The Colorado ZR2 Lift Conversation Starts With the Dampers

Here is the honest truth most shops will not tell you about the Colorado ZR2: GM already nailed the suspension. The Multimatic DSSV spool-valve dampers are some of the best factory shocks ever fitted to a production truck, and the ZR2 ships with front and rear lockers and a wider track. The wrong move is to rip all that out for a tall lift kit.

For most ZR2 owners, the right build is a modest clearance lift, bigger tires, armor, and lighting — keeping the dampers that make it special. For the standard Colorado and Canyon, a clean 2-to-3-inch lift with upper control arms and an alignment is the recipe. We spec the truck in front of us, not the catalog.

ZR2, Z71, or work truck, GMC or Chevy — every build starts the same: we walk the truck, ask how you use it, and tell you straight what is worth doing and what is already handled.

Chevy Colorado Lift Kit, GMC Canyon & ZR2 Options

From a clean level to a ZR2 tire-and-armor build, these are the four setups we run most across the Colorado and Canyon family. The ZR2 plays by different rules than the rest.

Daily Level

Colorado / Canyon Leveling Kit

A front level kills the rake and clears a slightly larger tire without changing the ride much — the affordable first move, and we still align it. See our leveling kit service for the rundown.

Most Popular

Colorado / Canyon Lift Kit, 2–3"

A full lift kit with matched front components, UCAs where needed, and a rear setup to keep it level. Clears 31s to 33s and handles real dirt with the midsize manners intact.

DSSV-Aware

ZR2 Tire, Armor & Clearance Build

For the ZR2, the smart build keeps the excellent DSSV dampers and adds tires, armor, and a modest clearance lift. We do not throw out factory engineering that is already class-leading.

Tuned Ride

Coilover Upgrade

Adjustable coilovers from Fox, King, and ICON for non-ZR2 trucks that want ride-height adjustment and better off-road damping — the path to ZR2-like control on a Z71 or work truck.

Colorado & Canyon Lift Fitment by Generation

The Colorado and Canyon share everything but the badge, and the ZR2 is a different beast from the rest of the lineup. Generation, trim, and those DSSV dampers all change the right approach. Here is what actually matters.

We confirm trim and damper type before anything is ordered, verify clearance at full lock and droop, and align and recalibrate whatever the lift affects.

2nd Gen · 2015–2022

The truck that revived the midsize segment. Independent front, leaf rear. Lifts cleanly with a 2-to-3-inch matched kit and UCAs; 31s to 33s fit with light trimming. Excellent aftermarket support.

3rd Gen · 2023+

A wider, more capable redesign with more electronics. Same IFS-front, leaf-rear layout with platform-specific kits. We use verified-fit parts and recalibrate the driver-assist aim the lift affects.

ZR2 & ZR2 Bison

Multimatic DSSV dampers, front and rear lockers, and a wider track from the factory. The smart build keeps the dampers and adds tires, armor, and clearance. The AEV Bison adds steel armor worth building around.

What a Lifted Colorado or Canyon Does Best

A built Colorado or Canyon — especially a ZR2 — is a genuinely capable midsize that handles Texas trails and daily duty with real composure. Here is where it shines and where to be realistic.

Handles Confidently

  • Fire roads, lease roads, and maintained dirt
  • Moderate to difficult trails — especially the ZR2
  • Mud, ruts, and crossings at reasonable depth
  • Overlanding and camp roads with gear
  • Daily driving and highway, fully retained
  • Sand and high-speed dirt, DSSV trucks excel here

Where to Be Realistic

  • Extreme crawling beyond locker-and-armor territory
  • Independent-front droop versus a solid front axle
  • Tall lifts that toss out excellent DSSV dampers
  • Big-tire builds that skip gearing and feel sluggish
✓ The Honest Version

The ZR2 is one of the best off-road trucks you can buy without lifting a finger, and the standard Colorado and Canyon build into excellent Texas trail rigs. The smart money keeps what GM did well and adds what it did not — and we will tell you which is which.

Colorado ZR2 & GMC Canyon Lift Questions, Answered

Yes, and the DSSV dampers are exactly why it takes a careful hand. The ZR2 ships with Multimatic spool-valve shocks that are genuinely excellent, so the goal is usually a small level or tire-clearance lift that keeps those dampers, not a tall kit that throws them away. We will tell you honestly when the factory setup is already doing the job and a modest tweak plus bigger tires is all you need.
Most Colorados and Canyons do best on a 2-to-3-inch suspension lift, which clears 31s to 33s and keeps the midsize driving like a midsize. The independent front means upper control arms help once you are past about 2 inches. We spec the height around the tire size and how you use the truck.
A 2-to-3-inch lift clears 31s to 33s on most Colorados and Canyons, usually with minor trimming. The ZR2 sits wider and higher and runs bigger rubber from the factory. We confirm fitment for your exact model year and wheel offset before ordering so it does not rub at full lock.
On a mild level, usually not. At a full 3-inch lift, aftermarket upper control arms restore the front geometry and let the truck align properly, which protects the ride and the tires. We will tell you whether your build needs them based on height and how you drive.
The ZR2 is one of the most capable midsizes you can buy off the lot, with DSSV dampers, front and rear lockers, and a wider track. For most owners the smart build is tires, armor, and a small clearance lift rather than tearing out a suspension GM engineered well. If you are chasing a specific goal beyond what the ZR2 covers, we will lay out the options honestly.
Not when it is done right. Quality components, the correct control arms, and a four-wheel alignment keep the ride composed and the tires wearing evenly. Problems come from spacer-only kits and skipped alignments, which is exactly what we avoid on every build.
