The JL is the most engineered Wrangler Jeep has ever built — improved suspension geometry, electric power steering, a wider track, and a factory chassis that takes lift modifications better than any previous generation. We build JLs from trail-ready daily drivers to fully armored Stage 2 rigs, in Houston, start to finish.
The JL Wrangler resolved nearly every complaint the Jeep community had about the JK. Wider track width for stability. Improved axle geometry that doesn't fight itself under load. Electric power steering that doesn't transmit every bump directly to your hands. A suspension that leaves the factory with better caster and track bar positioning than the JK ever had. These were deliberate engineering decisions, and they matter when it comes time to lift the truck.
But the JL introduced something the JK didn't have to contend with: a comprehensive ADAS suite. Forward-facing radar, lane departure sensors, backup camera pitch calibration — all of these are tied to the vehicle's ride height angle. Lift the JL without recalibrating those systems and you'll have a truck that throws false warnings, disables safety features, or worse, has a forward-collision system that doesn't aim correctly. We handle ADAS recalibration in-house on every JL build. It's not optional.
The other thing the JL requires is geometry honesty. At 2.5 inches of lift, you can get away with the factory track bar and control arms if you're running mild tires and not hammering trails. At 3.5 inches — which is the most popular JL build level because it's the sweet spot for 35-inch tires — the geometry correction isn't optional. Upper control arms and track bar adjustment are required, not upsells.
If someone is quoting you a JL 3.5" lift without upper control arms and track bar correction, they're quoting you an incomplete build. The JL's lift tiers aren't arbitrary. They're defined by tire size, geometry correction thresholds, and what the platform's suspension can accommodate without compromising drivability. Here's how we think about it.
Coil spacers or entry-level coil upgrade. Gets you to 33-inch tires — a meaningful step up from stock. At this lift height, factory control arms and track bar remain workable for most use cases. Alignment is still required.
The sweet spot. Opens up 35-inch tire fitment, meaningful trail capability improvement, and looks proportional on the JL's wide track. Requires upper control arms and track bar correction. ADAS recalibration mandatory. See our full 3.5" JL deep-dive for complete component specs.
Builds aimed at 37-inch tires and serious trail use. Requires lower control arm upgrades in addition to UCAs, extended brake lines, and full geometry correction front and rear. ADAS recalibration required. Pairs well with steel bumpers, skid plates, and a winch. BDS covers the JL at this height, long-arm systems included.
The JL's drivetrain is more capable from the factory than the JK's in most measurable ways — the Dana 44 front and rear axles are standard on Rubicon trims, the electronic sway bar disconnect means you can get articulation at the touch of a button on the trail, and the transfer case options are well-calibrated for both trail use and highway driving.
Where the JL's electronics get builders' attention is the ADAS integration. The forward camera pod on the windshield and the adaptive cruise radar sensors are calibrated to the vehicle's stock ride height. A 3.5-inch lift changes the pitch angle enough that recalibration is necessary. We use proper calibration equipment — not a workaround reset — to ensure the systems operate as designed after the build.
Tire size and gear ratios interact significantly on the JL. Stock 3.45 gears work reasonably well with 33-inch tires. Move to 35s without regeaing and you'll notice the JL feels sluggish in the low end — it's pulling more tire than the gearing was calibrated for. At 37s, regearing from 3.45 to 4.10 or 4.56 makes the truck drive the way it should. We discuss this during the consult so the build plan accounts for it.
Rubicon JLs ship with Dana 44 front and rear. Sport and Sahara trims get Dana 30 front / Dana 44 rear. The Dana 30 is the conversation point for 37"+ tire use — it's the limiting factor that drives the chromoly shaft and regear discussion on those builds.
Rubicon models have a factory electric sway bar disconnect that dramatically improves articulation with a single button press. Non-Rubicon trims use a manual sway bar — disconnection requires stopping and manually removing end links. Know which trim you have before budgeting the build.
Stock 3.45 gears handle 33" tires with acceptable performance. 35" tires benefit from 4.10 gears — you'll feel the difference. 37" tires perform better with 4.56 gears. Skipping the regear and running oversized tires costs you fuel economy, low-end torque, and puts more load on the transmission long term.
The JL 392 carries a 6.4L HEMI — significantly heavier than the 2.0T or 3.6L. Suspension component selection for the 392 accounts for this weight bias over the front axle. Spring rates and upper control arm geometry need to match the heavier front end. We spec 392 builds separately from standard JL builds.
The Wrangler 4xe adds a battery pack and electric motor to the drivetrain — which changes the vehicle's weight distribution and center of gravity. Lift components and spring rates for 4xe builds are spec'd differently. The 4xe also has additional ADAS calibration requirements post-lift given its powertrain management system integration.
Every JL with forward collision warning, adaptive cruise, or lane departure assist requires ADAS recalibration after a lift that changes ride height. We do this in-house. Any shop that doesn't offer recalibration is leaving you with a partially functional safety system on a truck with lifted geometry.
