The Tacoma is one of the best off-road platforms Toyota has ever built — and one of the most commonly lifted wrong. Its independent front end rewards a properly specced lift and punishes a cheap spacer. We build Tacomas around the geometry, not the photo.
Here is the thing about lifting a Toyota Tacoma: the front end is independent suspension, not a solid axle. Every inch of lift changes the control-arm angles, the CV axle angle, the camber and the caster — the whole front geometry. A solid-axle truck mostly just goes up. A Tacoma's front end has to be re-aimed, not just raised.
That is why we do not sell strut-top spacers as a finished answer. A spacer lifts the truck but leaves the ball joints and CV axles running at angles Toyota never intended, and you feel it as a harsh ride, fast tire wear, and clunks over bumps. A proper Tacoma suspension upgrade uses matched coilovers, the right upper control arms, and a rear pack that keeps the truck level under load — then it gets aligned before it leaves the bay.

Every one starts the same way: we walk the truck, ask how you actually drive it, and spec the parts that belong together. No two Tacomas leave on the same recipe unless they are driven the same way. From a one-inch level to a full long-travel pre-runner, these are the four Tacoma builds that roll through our bays most. Where you land depends on tire size, how much weight you carry, and whether you are chasing trails, desert, or just a better stance on the daily.
The most common first move on a Tacoma. A quality strut spacer or a coilover preload adjustment lifts the nose an inch or two, kills the factory rake, and clears a 265 or 275 — without touching ride quality. We level with parts matched to your generation, then align it. Leveling kits done right do not ride like a cheap top-hat spacer.
A real suspension lift — new coilovers up front, a matched rear leaf or add-a-leaf, and upper control arms to put the front geometry and CV angle back where Toyota intended. This is the build that clears 33s, soaks up washboard, and still tows and dailies. Old Man Emu, Bilstein 6112, Icon, or Dobinsons depending on how you load and drive it. We also fit wheels and tires for the Tacoma and front bumper and skid plates as part of the full build. BDS also builds solid Tacoma applications if you want a single matched kit.
Adjustable coilovers — Fox, King, Icon — give you ride-height adjustment, better damping, and rebuildable, revalvable hardware. The right answer when a budget strut can no longer handle the weight of a bumper, winch, and skids, or when you want the front dialed for your exact load.
Long-travel trades some street width for big wheel travel — Total Chaos or Camburg arms, mid- or long-travel coilovers, and a rear pack or link setup to match. Built for high-speed desert and whoops, not rock crawling. We will tell you honestly whether your use case actually wants it.
Not every Tacoma lifts the same way. The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generations have different front clearance, different rear setups, and different tire-fitment ceilings. Here is what actually changes from generation to generation — and why a "Tacoma lift kit" off a shelf is never the whole story.
We keep verified-fit parts for each platform and confirm clearance at full lock and full droop before anything is ordered. That is the step most shops skip and most rubbing complaints come from.

Leaf-sprung rear, coil-over front. Takes a 3-inch lift well; upper control arms are recommended above 2 inches to fix the ball-joint angle. 33s are the comfortable ceiling without major trimming — a 285/75R16 is the classic fitment.
Tighter front clearance. Above roughly 2.5 inches the factory UCAs run out of CV-angle room, so aftermarket arms become a need, not an option. 33s clear with a mild cab-mount trim; 35s want a cab-mount chop and fender liner work.
New platform, coil-sprung rear on many trims, and far more electronics. Fitment data is still maturing, so we spec to verified-fit parts and recalibrate what the lift affects instead of guessing. Bring it in and we will walk it together.
A lifted Tacoma on 33s is a phenomenal high-speed desert and overland platform. Understanding where that capability tops out helps you decide if this is the right build for how you actually use the truck — not how you picture using it someday.
If your real use is fire roads, overlanding, hunting leases, and looking right in the H-E-B lot, a 3-inch Tacoma build is exactly right. If you genuinely want to crawl Moab, a solid-axle platform is the better starting point — and we will tell you that for free before you spend a dime here.
