Big Tires Without a Regear Is Half a Build

Here is the most common mistake we fix: a customer puts 35s or 37s on a truck, loves the look, and then wonders why it suddenly feels gutless, runs hot, and gets worse mileage. The tires did not break anything — they changed the math. A taller, heavier tire is like permanently towing a trailer your gearing was never set up for.

Regearing swaps the ring and pinion to a numerically higher ratio that gives the drivetrain back the leverage it lost. Done right, a regeared truck on 37s drives like a stock truck on stock tires — responsive, cool, and happy to tow. It is the single most under-appreciated step in a big-tire build, and the one people most often skip until they feel the difference in someone else's rig. Regearing is often combined with transfer case upgrades for the best low-range crawl ratio. Stock–33s

4.10 – 4.56

Mild tire bumps to a 33 often work on a factory ratio or a modest regear to around 4.10–4.56. Many trucks tolerate 33s without regearing, especially big-torque V8s and diesels. We will tell you honestly if you can skip it.

35s

4.56 – 4.88

The 35-inch sweet spot for most trucks and Jeeps. 4.56 for torquey trucks that tow lightly, 4.88 for lower-powered engines or anything that works hard. This is where regearing goes from optional to strongly recommended.

37s

4.88 – 5.13

For 37-inch tires, 4.88 to 5.13 is the common range, with 5.13 typical on Jeeps and heavier rigs. At this tire size, running stock gears is genuinely hard on the drivetrain — regearing is part of the build, not an add-on.

40s+

5.13 and Up

Big 40-inch builds and heavy rigs go to 5.13, 5.38, or beyond. At this point the axle and shafts are also in the conversation — we plan gears, chromoly shafts, and lockers together.

Some big-torque trucks tolerate 35s without it, but most are far better regeared.
