A Front Bumper Is Function First, Looks Second

A bumper is the most visible mod on a truck, so it is the one people buy for looks first — and that is backwards. The job of a front bumper is to mount a winch solidly, give you real recovery points, improve your approach angle so you do not catch the nose on a ledge, and take an impact without folding into the radiator. If it looks good doing all that, great. If it only looks good, it is jewelry.

The most dangerous thing we see is a winch hung off a bumper that was never built to hold one. A winch under load puts thousands of pounds through its mount — if that mount is not tied to the frame and built for it, it tears loose, and now you have a projectile on a cable. Every bumper we build integrates the winch and recovery points as structure, not afterthoughts.

This page is the deep dive on bumpers and fabrication. For winches, recovery gear, and the broader accessory picture, start with our accessories and recovery hub, and pair a front bumper with skid plates and rock sliders for full coverage.

Front Bumper, Rear Bumper & Custom Options

From a clean tube bumper to a fully custom-fabricated front and rear set, these are the four directions we build most — matched to how you drive and what you need to mount.

Most Popular

Winch-Ready Front Bumper

A plate-steel front bumper with an integrated, frame-tied winch mount, fairlead provision, recovery points, and light tabs. Improves approach angle and takes a real hit. The foundation of a recovery-capable front end.

Storage & Spare

Rear Bumper + Tire Carrier

A rear bumper with a swing-out tire carrier that holds an oversized 35 or 37-inch spare the factory location will not, plus recovery points and room for fuel or gear. A near-must on a big-tire overland build.

Lightweight

Tube Bumper

A lighter, cleaner tube bumper for brush, animal strikes, and a sharp look while keeping factory sensors. The right call when you want protection and style without the full weight of a plate-steel armor bumper up front.

Built to Order

Custom Fabricated Bumper

No good off-the-shelf option, or a specific winch, light, and carrier combination in mind? We design and weld a custom bumper in-house to fit your frame and your build — real recovery points and proper integration, not just a look.

What a Custom Bumper Adds — and the Tradeoffs

A good bumper does several jobs at once, and it comes with tradeoffs worth planning for. Here is the honest picture.

What It Adds

  • A solid, frame-tied winch mount
  • Real, rated recovery points front and rear
  • Better approach and departure angles
  • Impact protection for the radiator and core support
  • A swing-out home for an oversized spare
  • Light, antenna, and accessory mounting

The Tradeoffs

  • Steel adds weight over the front axle
  • Heavy front weight can drop the nose without spring planning
  • Some bumpers affect parking sensors or radar placement
  • Full plate is overkill on a purely street truck
✓ The Honest Version

Match the bumper to the mission. A street and light-trail truck is well served by a tube bumper that keeps the sensors and the weight down. A recovery-capable rig wants frame-tied steel with a real winch mount. We plan the bumper alongside the suspension so the front weight does not leave the nose sitting low.

Bumper Fabrication & Welding Done In-House

A bumper is a structural part, and on a recovery rig it is a safety part. The welds, the mounting, and the integration are what separate a bumper you can winch off of from a liability. Here is the bar we hold on every build, whether it is a stocked brand or fully custom.

We install proven bumpers and fabricate custom steel in-house — but on a bumper, the frame mounting and the welds matter more than the badge.

Winch Integration

The winch mount is tied to the frame and built for the full pulling load, with fairlead and clean, fused wiring. We pair bumpers with Warn winches and run the wiring marine-grade so it survives Houston weather.

Recovery Points

Real rated recovery points — shackle mounts or recovery rings tied to the frame — front and rear. A tow hook is not a recovery point; we build mounts that take a snatch-strap or kinetic-rope load without tearing out.

Sensor & Airbag Integration

We integrate factory parking sensors, cameras, and forward radar where the bumper allows, and we keep the factory crash structure and airbag sensors working. If a bumper affects a sensor, you hear it from us before we build, not after.

How We Build Your Bumper

Every bumper job follows the same five-step path we use across the shop — the full build process covers the details.

01

Consult & Plan

We talk through winch, recovery, sensors, and how you drive, then pick stocked or custom. No quote without it.

02

Spec & Quote

Front, rear, or both — bumper style, winch, carrier, and lights matched to your rig and budget.

03

Build & Weld

Stocked install or custom fab, winch and recovery points integrated, sensors retained, welded clean.

04

Wire & Fit

Winch and lights wired fused and marine-grade, fitment verified, finish coated against Houston humidity.

05

Deliver & Follow-Up

Walkthrough of the winch and recovery points, documentation, and a re-torque check after first use.

Bumper & Armor Questions, Answered

It depends on the job. A tube bumper is lighter, cheaper, and great for light brush, animal strikes, and a clean look while keeping factory sensors. A full plate-steel front bumper is heavier but takes real impacts, mounts a winch solidly, and improves your approach angle for serious wheeling. We match the bumper to how you drive — there is no point hanging eighty pounds of steel off a mall crawler, and no point putting a light tube bumper on a rig that needs a winch.
A winch-ready bumper has an integrated, reinforced mount that holds the winch solidly tied into the frame, plus fairlead and wiring provisions and usually proper recovery points. A winch is useless — and dangerous — bolted to a bumper that is not built to take the load, so winch integration is structural, not cosmetic. We build the winch mount as part of the bumper and tie it to the frame.
A full-width bumper protects the corners and looks more like a factory bumper, which many owners prefer for a daily-driven truck. A stubby or mid-width bumper exposes the front tires for a better approach angle and tire clearance on technical trails, at the cost of corner coverage. We pick based on whether your priority is street looks and corner protection or maximum trail clearance.
Yes — custom fabrication is one of our specialties. When there is no good off-the-shelf bumper for your vehicle, or you want a specific design, winch, light, and tire-carrier combination, we design and weld a custom bumper in-house to fit your frame and your build. Every custom bumper is built around real recovery points and proper winch integration, not just looks.
It can, and we plan for both. A heavy steel front bumper plus a winch adds real weight over the front axle, which can drop the nose — so we factor it into your spring and lift choice so the truck sits level. We also integrate factory parking sensors, cameras, and forward-facing radar where possible, and tell you up front if a given bumper affects a sensor so there are no surprises.
Yes. A rear bumper with an integrated swing-out tire carrier is one of the best upgrades for a rig on 35s or 37s, since the oversized spare often will not fit in the factory location. We build the carrier into the rear bumper so it latches solid, swings clear of the tailgate, and can also carry fuel or recovery gear. See our overlanding page for how it fits a full build.
