A diesel truck is not a gas truck with a different engine. The block is heavier, the front axle carries more load, and the spring rates that work on a 5.3L Silverado will sag under a Duramax. Lifting a diesel correctly means spec'ing for the actual weight over the front axle — not applying a gas-truck lift kit and calling it done. We build Cummins, Duramax, and Powerstroke trucks in Houston, and we start with the weight math before we pick a single part.
The Cummins 6.7-liter inline-six in a Ram 2500 weighs roughly 1,100 pounds. The Duramax 6.6-liter V8 is in a similar range. The 6.7L Power Stroke in a Super Duty is heavier still. In every case, that weight sits over the front axle — and the front axle is what the lift kit has to hold up at ride height without sagging. Before deciding on lift height, it helps to understand what changes when you lift a diesel truck versus a gas platform.
When a shop installs a lift kit spec'd for a gas version of the same truck on a diesel, the front springs are typically too soft for the actual load. The result is nose sag — the truck sits lower in the front than intended, geometry goes off spec, and the tow-hitch angle changes in a way that affects trailer stability. In some cases, the truck develops a wander at highway speed that owners mistakenly attribute to the lift rather than to the undersized spring rate.
The fix isn't complicated — it requires specifying the right spring rate for the diesel platform before ordering parts. But it requires knowing that the problem exists. A lot of shops don't account for it. We do, on every diesel build, as the first calculation before anything else.
Iron Ridge Off-Road does not perform diesel emissions modifications: no DPF removal, no EGR delete, no tuning that removes emissions controls. Every diesel truck we lift leaves the shop emissions-compliant and inspection-ready. This is not negotiable.
Most 3/4-ton and 1-ton diesel trucks use solid front axles — which is actually good news for off-road builds. Solid axles lift more predictably and handle higher lift heights without the CV angle problems that affect IFS trucks. Here's what each major platform uses.
Solid front axle (Dana 60 on most trims) with coil springs front, leaf springs rear. Lifts cleanly at 2"–6" depending on the system. The Cummins front-end weight requires stiffer-than-standard front coils. Long-arm kits are available for 4"+ builds. Ram's rear leaf spring setup accepts AAL or full replacement packs.
Solid front axle with coil springs, leaf springs rear. Similar architecture to the Ram — responds well to 2"–4" coil spring replacements. Duramax-specific spring rates are required for correct ride height and load capacity. Full UCA systems are available for 3.5"+ builds that need additional geometry correction.

Lifts well from 2" to 6" with the right components. Rear leaf springs typically use AAL or full replacements for matched rear lift.
At extreme lift heights with aggressive nose-up rake, the diesel air intake angle can shift enough to matter — primarily on trucks where the intake draws from low in the engine bay or where a snorkel is routed to a specific angle. We review intake angle on any diesel build over 4" of lift before finalizing the build spec.
At 3" and below, most solid-axle diesel trucks tolerate the change in driveshaft angle without issues. Above 3.5"–4", depending on the platform, a driveshaft inspection and potentially a custom-length or double-cardan replacement becomes part of the build to avoid vibration and premature U-joint wear.
A correctly spec'd diesel lift maintains factory tow ratings at moderate lift heights. Oversized tires without a regear, undersized spring rates, and geometry corrections left uncorrected all reduce effective tow stability — not the lift itself. We discuss tow use at the consult and build accordingly.
The three major diesel platforms share an architecture — solid front axle, heavy block, coil or leaf springs — but each has specific lift kit lines that perform better than universal kits. Rough Country, BDS, Fabtech, and ReadyLIFT all make diesel-specific lift kits with spring rates matched to each platform's actual front-axle weight. That's what we use. At the top of that range, Carli builds progressive-rate coil systems specifically for the Ram HD and Super Duty front ends, which is the honest answer when an owner wants the empty-versus-loaded ride solved rather than just the height raised. We don't take a gas truck kit and add spacers to compensate for diesel weight.
Ram 2500 builds typically use a coil spring replacement front with a matched add-a-leaf rear — giving the truck 2.5" to 4" of lift with spring rates appropriate for the Cummins front load and trailer tongue weight when towing. GM 2500/3500 builds follow a similar pattern, with coil spring replacements spec'd to Duramax weight — see our Chevy Silverado build page for platform-specific notes. Super Duty builds are some of the most common in our shop — the Ford F-250 and F-350 are popular work trucks in the Houston market, and owners want them lifted without sacrificing the tow capacity they depend on.
The other platform-specific variable is tires. Diesel trucks at 3"–4" of lift typically run 35-inch tires well. Moving to 37s on a diesel usually triggers a regear conversation — the factory axle ratios (3.73, 4.10, or 4.30 depending on trim) may not adequately compensate for the taller tire at diesel torque levels, and fuel economy suffers noticeably.
Diesel truck builds follow the same tier logic as any other platform — but the spring rate requirement makes each tier's component selection more specific. Here's how we structure diesel builds.
Diesel-spec coil spring replacements (not spacers) with matched rear add-a-leaf. Spring rates appropriate for front-axle diesel weight. At 2"–3", factory tow rating is maintained. Tire fitment opens to 35 inches. Alignment included. For trucks that only need to level the stance, a leveling kit may be the right starting point before committing to a full lift.
Full coil and shock replacement system with UCAs (on platforms that benefit from UCA geometry correction at this height). Rear coil or leaf spring upgrade. Opens 35"–37" tire fitment. Driveshaft inspection included at this tier.
Long-arm or custom suspension system. Extended brake lines. Driveshaft modification where required. 37"+ tires with regear discussion. Armor package recommended. At this build level, tow-rating impact needs explicit discussion — some owners trade tow rating for trail performance intentionally.
